Embo campaign - part two

A new chapter - Our next challenge is to ride from Chatham to Gibraltar from 02-12 June 2009 for Emily Rose Loughrey.

In June 2007 we lost our beautiful daughter Emily Rose to a wild form of cancer. Emily was just 22 years of age when she passd away. In such a short life she had achieved more than most in a full life. Emily always had a smile and always helped others when she could. Emily made friends everywhere she worked and everywhere she went. It has been these friends who helped us to raise £56000 for CLIC Sargent during our last campaign. To see how we managed to raise the money please have a look at our blog.

Last year our flagship event was the Lands End to John O Groats Bike Ride EMBO LEJOG.

This year Russ Oldfield and I are going to bike ride from Chatham to Gibraltar.
We will be setting off on our marathon journey on 02 June 2009 (what would have been Emilys 24th birthday) and arriving in Gibraltar on 12 June 09 (the 2nd anniversary of her passing away) The bike ride will be a gruelling 150 miles a day through mainland Europe which takes in the Pyrenees on route to Gibraltar.

As a family we will be forever in debt to Emily Rose for giving us 22 years of treasured moments, they were quality years. The debt also runs to the staff of Kennaway Ward at the Royal Marsden Sutton and the CLIC Sargent team for the support they gave and continue to give to us the Loughrey Family. CLIC Sargent provides outstanding care and support for all children and young people up to the age of 25 with cancer. CLIC also provides support for their families and carers.

Thank You for helping us make a difference

ENDURANCE TRAINING IN MALTA

The Sweet Escape

Training has been long and arduous, every night a 20/30 miler in the pouring rain and head wind was not doing anything for morale so a well deserved change of environment was called for.

On 13 August 2007, Russ, Pam, Caroline & myself hopped on a plane to Malta to meet Jess (Embo's sister). Russ & I knew we were in for a grilling from our trainers.
14 August 2007

My birthday started with a walk along the harbour front with Russ followed by a nice cooked breakfast. Some lovely birthday presents that included a puncture repair kit and spare inner tube - bad luck!!!

Meet the Trainers

Caroline and Pam relaxing at the swim bar.

Over the next few days we were physically pushed to the limit, Russ & I could not wait to get home for a rest. At least City were top of the table and went on to beat Utd. Home, sweet, home. Jessy was left in Malta to carry on with her training!!!!!

A big thanks to the Rothenbergs for making us all feel at home and looking after our Jessy. Well done Jessy on your fantastic A Level results.

THE ROUTE

Stage 1 -02 June 08 (Embo's Birthday)

Lands End-Exeter 119 Miles

An easy stage to start with, predominantly on the A30 through the Cornish countryside. The route should be quiet fast appropriate 12-15 miles per hour. We will go around Dartmoor, don't fancy a bleak last 20/30miles (Might shorten this stage)

Stage 2 - 03 June 2008

Exeter-Bristol - 82.1 Miles

Another easy stage!!! All west country, Bristol is a lovely city (When you are not shattered)

Stage 3 - 04 June 2008

Bristol-Bridgnorth - 92.5 Miles

We are going via Mum and Dads in Malvern, always good for a cup of tea, should be feeling good-mid England.

Stage 4 - 05 June 2008

Bridgenorth-Little Sutton - 64.5 Miles

Gentle roll into Gods country - all will be there to see us home to a well deserved rest day!!!

06 June 2008 - Rest Day (10-20 Mile stretch)

Stage 5 - 07 June 2008

Little Sutton-Kendal - 86 Miles

Tough uphill stretch through the heart of Merseyside (Ferry across the Mersey) up to the Riddle valley and onto the Lakes. The stages are going to be more picturesque from now (Not that you can see when your blowing out of your backside)

Stage 6 -08 June 2008

Kendal - Dumfries - 82.4 Miles

Into Scotland we roll!!! Gretna is our first port of call (Won't be stopping there!!!)

Rest in the lovely town of Dumfries.

Stage 7 - 09 June 2008

Dumfries-Inverbeg -108 Miles

Looking forward to this stage, the last flat stage before King of the Mountains stage. The stage meanders through Glasgow and along side Loch Lommond. (Think we are camping tonight)

Stage 8 - 10 June 2008

Inverbeg-Invergarry-96.9 Miles

Through the mighty Glens we will ride, gathering strenght from the mountains around us. This is the stage I am most looking forward too (Polka dot for me)

Stage 9 -11 June 2008

Invergarry- Helmsdale -109 Miles

You can feel the end is near, along Loch Ness into Inverness and onto the last road (A9) Still a long stage for tired legs.

Stage 10 -12 June 2008

Helmsdale - John O Groats - 51.2 Miles

A year to the day that Embo left on her travels. We will roll out of Helmsdale on the short but uphill stretch to our objective. The plan is to be in JOG by 1200hrs.

Tea and Medals and a well deserved rest for all!!!

This is my best friend Russ (in white) and I, 10 months before we start our trek from Lands End to John O Groats. We will be joined on the ride by several riders, all friends and Embo's sister Jess.
